New Delhi, Thursday 6 Mar 2025: Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the AI (artificial intelligence) Compute Portal. This AI portal will provide researchers, government agencies, and startups access to advanced Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and other high-powered computing resources.
At this launch, Vaishnaw also announced two key initiatives i.e. establishing 27 government AI data labs and reviewing all the received applications for foundational AI model development.
To advance AI capabilities in India, the government has approved the IndiaAI Mission in 2024, committing ₹10,300 crore over five years. This project is building a world-class computing hub, a powerhouse of 18,693 GPUs, designed to drive breakthroughs. This project’s capacity has surpassed DeepSeek by nearly nine times and reaches about two-thirds of ChatGPT’s computing power.
The platform has been launched with a 10,000 GPU initial offering, with more deployment in the future. India launched an open GPU marketplace to make powerful computing available to more people.
The Indian government is working with 10 companies for GPUs and plans to build its own GPUs in 3-5 years.
