Perplexity Plans to Provide Free Access to its Pro-version AI for Indian Students

Perplexity Plans to Provide Free Access to its Pro-version AI for Indian Students

Perplexity, a conversational AI (artificial engine) search engine is planning to offer its Pro version free for students in India. However, the free version has limited functionalities. Users with paid plans will be able to add image generation tools, opt for unlimited file upload, and do more.

During an online session with Paytm founder & CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Perplexity Cofounder and CEO Aravind Srinivas shared the company’s goal to make its pro version free of charge for Indian students.

He said, “We are working with a student group on WhatsApp. We are aiming for close to a million sign-ups by mid-March. Our goal is to make sure that no student has to pay for a pro version of Perplexity anywhere in the world. If you put out a slogan where knowledge begins then you have to be serious about it. Knowledge matters most to the student. We want to bring it to India for students”.

The outbreak of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI platform has fueled the demand for the development of low-cost AI.

Srinivas said, “We are figuring out a way to make the pro plan widely accessible to everybody without them having to pay $20 equivalent… give us a few months, or even a few weeks, to figure it out. These things are moving really fast. I don’t want to give you a poor timeline here,”

Responding to a question if the AI app can be subscribed through Paytm, Srinivas said, “The UPI or Paytm payment app, the fundamental model there is, we work around with the stripe APIs, and I think it’s pretty difficult to accept those kinds of payments right now. I hope we can figure our solution together pretty soon”.

98% of Indian Business Leaders Support AI, But Talent is Scarce Says LinkedIn Report

98% of Indian Business Leaders Support AI, But Talent is Scarce Says LinkedIn Report

A recent LinkedIn report states that 98% of Indian business leaders support AI (artificial intelligence) adoption in 2025 but HRs are unable to find individuals with the right skills.

Indian employers find that at least 50% of job applications fail to meet minimum qualifications. This indicates a significant mismatch between applicant skills and job requirements. In addition, it suggests either a lack of applicant attention to job details or a desperate search for employment.

The report said, “Finding candidates with the right technical (61 per cent) and soft skills (57 per cent) remains their biggest hiring challenge”.

LinkedIn in the report said, “HR professionals in India also state they receive too many applications (47 per cent) from candidates who are not a fit for the role (41 per cent) and are hiring more selectively in 2025. More than half of HR professionals in India say they would only consider reaching out to (55 per cent) and hiring (54 per cent) candidates who meet 80% or more of job qualifications”.

Every learning and development professional surveyed confirms the equal importance of soft and technical skills. According to a global survey of 1,271 recruiting professionals across 23 countries, 48% of Indian leaders prioritise investing in AI training and development.

Ruchee Anand, India Country Head, Talent & Learning Solutions, LinkedIn said “Too often, companies pour resources into AI tools without the right talent to unlock their full potential, turning a game-changing opportunity into a missed one. To break this cycle, businesses need to approach hiring with a skills-first mindset”.

Elon Musk Reacts to Satya Nadella's Shared Video on AI Improving Indian Farming

Elon Musk Reacts to Satya Nadella’s Shared Video on AI Improving Indian Farming

Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella shared a video clip on how AI (artificial intelligence) is revolutionising Indian farming by improving the yield of land. Additionally, he mentioned that AI in Indian farming leads to better management of water and minimum chemical usage.

In response to the shared video clip, Elon Musk agreed that artificial intelligence can improve everything. Nadella shared this video clip with the caption ‘“A fantastic example of AI’s impact on agriculture,”.

Satya Nadella's Video

In the video, Nadella explained how AI aids small farmers to increase their productivity.

“The one example that I wanted to highlight was one of the small farmers who was part of the Baramati Co-op where you can take this powerful technology, and make it have impact where a small landowner is able to improve the yield of their land. And the numbers they shared in terms of reduction in chemicals, improvement in water usage, and ultimately yield was phenomenal’’ he added.

“One of the things it does is sensor fusion. We’ve been talking about it for decades. This is using geospatial data spatial temporal data from drones from satellites from soil all getting connected in real time, and then to apply AI to it and then translate it back into know, asking questions in there vernacular language,”

Highlighting the breakthrough, Nadella stated, “We’ve created an entirely new state of matter, unlocked by a new class of materials— topoconductors-that enable a fundamental leap in computing.”

Responding to this post, Tesla CEO said “More and more breakthroughs with quantum computing..”

India’s AI Mission Portal is Launching Soon, Supported by 14,000 GPUs

The IndiaAI Mission has secured approximately 14,000 GPUs for its common compute capacity. These GPUs will be supplied by ten companies that submitted the lowest bids for different GPU types, a senior government official said. The IndiaAI Compute Portal will be launched by IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This portal will provide a shared computing infrastructure for researchers and startups to build AI-driven solutions.

While over 10,000 GPUs are already available through Yotta Data Services, E2E Networks, Tata Communications, and AWS’s managed service providers, Jio Platforms and CtrlS Datacenters will purchase the rest of the 4,000.

The ten companies had proposed providing 18,693 GPUs for the mission’s AI Compute pillar. After the IT ministry announced the lowest bids on January 30 for different types of GPUs, bidders had until February 14 to meet them. They ultimately met the L1 bids for about 14,000 GPUs.

44% of the IndiaAI Mission’s ₹10,371.92 crores ($1.25 billion) budget, specifically ₹4,563.36 crores, will be invested in over 10,000 GPUs over the next five years to boost compute capacity.

This initiative can give a significant boost to AI development in India by providing essential computing resources, leading to cutting-edge AI solutions across various sectors like finance, education, healthcare, and manufacturing.
